Total Body Composition Scan

TOTAL BODY COMPOSITION

(Medical Practitioner, Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Sports and Exercise Physician, Physiotherapist, Accredited Exercise Physiologist (ESSA) or Sports Medicine Doctor may refer clients for a Body Composition scan.)

Body composition scan measures  regional (arms, legs and trunk) and whole-body lean, fat tissue mass and percentage fat which are compared to reference populations.

Scans can be useful in the monitoring/management/assessment of:

  • Muscle weakness or poor physical functioning

  • Health screening programs

  • Research projects

  • Limb asymmetry or wasting post-injury or surgery

  • Endocrine imbalances

  • Metabolic syndromes

  • Visceral adipose fat (VAT)

  • Weight loss regimens

  • After undergoing bariatric surgery to assess fat and lean mass changes

  • Sarcopenia in patients 65 years and older

  • Monitoring weight disorders (obesity/metabolic disorders and anorexia)

  • Sports performance

  • Risk of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)

VAT (Visersal Adipose Tissue)
DEXA BMD.jpg

VAT (Visceral Adipose Tissue)

The software can determine  estimates of VAT within the android region. Visceral fat is associated with several health problems including Type 2-diabetes, heart disease, colon cancer and stroke.

Core Scan results have been validated for adults between the ages of 18-90 and with a BMI (Body Mass Index) in the range of 18.5 – 40. CoreScan software for quantifying VAT is accurate reproducible and practical.

Sacropenia Assessment

SACROPENIA (65 Years and Over)

Sarcopenia is a significant risk factor for disability in old age(1) and when coupled with osteoporosis, the risk of falling with a significant fracture is increased(2).

Total body composition measures appendicular lean mass (ALM). When we  add values of muscle strength and gait speed (as supplied by the referring doctor), a complete integrated Sarcopenia assessment is made.

Our body composition scans provide the following:

  • A color mapped image of the whole body showing fat, muscle and bone

  • Percentage fat within the whole body and regional areas (arms, legs and trunk)

  • Lean muscle mass within the whole body and regional areas.

  • Android/gynoid fat ratios

  • Estimate of visceral fat

  • Basal Metabolic Rate

  • Relative Skeletal Muscle Index (gives indication of sarcopenia risk)

  • Bone mineral Density of the whole body (indication of osteoporosis risk)

  • We can track  results over time to ensure patients are achieving their health, fitness or sporting goals.

DEXA Bone Mineral Density

DEXA BONE MINERAL DENSITY

The goal of the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is to reduce a person’s overall fracture risk, not just to maintain bone density.(3) We offer a number of services at Bone and Body Healthscan, not only to assess for osteoporosis but also to determine vertebral fractures, atypical femoral fractures and orthopaedic hip and knee assessments.

STANDARD BONE MINERAL DENSITY SCAN

We measure lumbar spine (l1-L4) and both hips as standard in our bone mineral density (DXA) sccans. Forearm is included when necessary or as requested.

LATERAL VERTEBRAL ASSESSMENT (VFA) MORPHOMETRY)

DXA of the full length of the lateral spine used to detect vertebral fractures.

LVA identifies vertebral deformations and estimates vertebral heights

ANTERIOR VERTEBRAL ASESSMENT

DXA of the full length of the anterior spine used to detect vertebral fractures.

Can be done in conjunction with the LVA.

TOTAL BONE MINERAL DENSITY

Offers a comprehensive view of total bone mineral density for the entire body

ATYPICAL FEMORAL FRACTURE (AFF)

Atypical Femoral Fracture (AFF) provides an x-ray image of the entire femur to allow the visualization of any focal reaction or thickening of the lateral cortex.

In addition, the software displays quantitative measurements of the cortical width along the femoral shaft.

This is a valuable tool for clinicians whose patients have been on long term treatment for the prevention of osteoporotic fractures and are susceptible to developing AFF(s).

ORTHOPAEDIC HIP

This gives an estimate of bone mineral density around the prosthesis.

It allows you to determine standard or extended Gruen zones of the hip, measuring the interface between the prosthetic material and the surrounding bone to determine prosthesis loosening.

ORTHOPAEDIC KNEE

This measurement and analysis provides a bone mineral density for pre and post-surgery.

Can be useful for determining prosthetic loosening.

Sketelal Health Assessment in Children and Adolescents (ages 5-19)

Our DXA scans in children and teenagers can be used to provide:

  • BMD (bone mineral density),

  • BMC (bone mineral content),

  • fat mass and lean mass.

  • BMD calculated to bone age (results from a bone age xray required).

  • monitoring of disease and/or the effects of medication on the body

Assessing and monitoring children and teenagers with:

  • developmental problems

  • chronic conditions associated with malnutrition i.e. anorexia nervosa, inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis

  • both muscle and skeletal deficits i.e. idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis.

All paediatrics have a whole body scan as well as separate AP spine and hips. AP spine and TBLH (total body less head) are the most accurate and reproducible skeletal sites for performing BMC and BMD measurements.
